Church of Christ Authors

Church of Christ Authors

This work is an index or registry of all works by Church of Christ in our library. It is organized by author last name. Additionally, there is material on the general area of Church of Christ, as well as pertinent doctrinal observations about this group. Some authors and/or works have more detailed information about them.

Overview

The Church of Christ group is basically a branch off of mainstream Christianity following Campbell (alternately called Campbellites). Their principle “claim to fame” is that they think that modern Christianity has strayed from its biblical roots, and only they are the true representation of Christianity today. (Mormons also strongly think this way, but just about every denomination thinks the same of themselves.) Their main complaint is that the organized church of our day (denominations basically) is unbiblical. (I happen to agree with them here.)

Their complaint has forced them into a position of rejecting ANY NAME for Christianity, and they do not like to be called by any of the common ways church name themselves today, and this applies to local churches or groups of churches. But none-the-less they fall into the same errors of naming themselves as what they complain about.

Other marks of these churches in that they believe in baptismal regeneration, i.e. nobody is saved until after they get wet, so immediate baptism is a must for them. I personally know some Church of Christ people and they tell me that many in the group refute this point. They don’t believe in that.

Evaluation

This one is difficult. I would definitely disagree with the need for baptism before one is truly saved. That is a wrong doctrine. But having said that, one must confess Christ they are saved. Baptism is simply a public official confession of Christ as your Saviour. So I can see where they would be confused. I don’t agree with them, but I understand where they get their false doctrine from. I would be wary of anything a Church of Christ person would write about baptism.

Practically, some of these Church of Christ people write excellent material (apart from baptism). Mark Copeland has outlined sermons that are very well constructed, and they are probably some of the best-constructed sermons I have seen. Things to use as examples in a sermon preparation class as to how to do it right. Other of their writings are also good. I would use these writings by this group with some caution, but none-the-less use them.
