How does theWord Work

In understanding the theWord Bible program software, you need to understand that this is a standard Windows program (although it can easily be used on other platforms through emulators). The program uses files, and while you install the program, and it will run these files “silently,” (without you needing to intervene in that), one of the great benefits of theWord is that there are many, many additional files that can be downloaded and added to the program to invest more value in it.

Personally, I like the older works, but if you want more modern works, please visit theWord’s official premium module website (https://www.thewordbooks.com/) where you can buy them. If you join their free email list, you can get monthly discounts, so check it out.

Understanding the Extensions used by theWord

cmt.twm and gbk.twm are two extensions that theWord uses. A gbk extension means general book format. A cmt extension means that this work is keyed like a commentary, with each portion of text assigned to a specific book of the Bible (think introduction), chapter (again introduction), and chapter:verse (which is the commentary on that particular verse or passage). Within theWord, you can open and link a commentary window to a Bibleview window, and as you scroll the Bible only the commentaries that have comments on the verse you are on in the Bibleview window will appear. Extremely useful for Bible study. Note that I have many identical works duplicated with cmt and gbk versions. Some people find one better or more useful, depending on their particular motive of study at the moment. The content should be the same in both works, just the formatting is different.

The programmer of theWord software, Costas Stergiou, has made it so that once you install the program, it will automatically recognize all the files that it can use by the extensions. These files are called modules. In a Windows File Explorer, click on one of the files, and theWord will install it into the correct Windows directory for automatic use by the program when it is run. If it is presently running when you click on the file in the Windows File Explorer, the module will not be available until you completely quit the program and restart it.

https://theword-modules.com/ I only recommend the KJV Bible. The old language is sometimes difficult for some, but it is very tightly linked to the Hebrew and Greek. For comparative studies of Bible versions, theWord allows a side-by-side study unparalleled in other programs. I would recommend you go to my tutorial site and look for pages on Bibles.

One of theWord’s great features is simply that it has the power to link. You can set a Bible dictionary to popup the definition of the words in the Bible view window automatically. (See these tutorials, Bible Dictionary Lookup Popup Class, theWord Dictionary Word Lookup)

A theWord commentary does not just have the text of the commentary work, but it also has commentary modules which have chapters and verses in separate entries, so that you pull up all the commentaries that have comments on a particular verse you are studying. This is effortless once you set your commentaries you want to use.

A Bible reading plan is a separate part of the program which allows you to read through parts of the Bible on a daily schedule. The program tells you which passages to read each day.

Module Authors Downloads

Notes: Our module standards are the following: (1) all filenames have the format, Last Name-First Name-Title, with spaces replaced by hyphens, because in some cases, that makes a difference (in html not theWord). In case the author is not known, the work will be stored in Unknown authors or Numbers. (2) I am reformatting all of our works as time permits, but really I am dealing with more than 100,000 theWord modules in my archives and laptop, so it will take some time before I can get back to reformatting, and topics with Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc. will be replaced with 1., 2., etc. (3) All module creator attributes will be in the actual module in Module Properties, and not included in the filename. (4) Usually, a major reformat or change to the module is a major version number revision, and minor changes a minor version number. I am beginning to place the module version number in the filename.

Files without any version number, e.g. “-v1.gbk.twm”, are to differentiate between old file versions and newer ones, some created by me, some by others that I have found on the web, or people send me these files. I cannot vouch for the quality of these files. If you find an error, a poor formatting in a module, a corrupted file, or a file that you think has a copyright issue, please send me the name of the file to [email protected]. I will look into it, maybe delete it from this site. I cannot handle files you download from other websites.

Filename Abbreviations I use: -e Encrypted, -(b) book length work, -(a) article.

Our New Plan for this Website: I have various websites dedicated to theWord, eSword, and MySword formats (see above or in the footer of this page), as well as html webpages, PDFs, Kindle, etc. This website will only have theWord formatted works on it. All commentary theWord modules (whether in CMT extension format or GBK extension format) will be on the theWord Commentary website. Likewise, all dictionaries will be on the theWord Dictionary website.

Additionally, for reasons of making the back end of this website easier to maintain and prevent problems, I am spreading out some of these modules to my other websites, and we will link to our own websites where the actual module is hosted. Don’t be surprised, if in wanting to download a module, you are taken to another of my theWord websites for the actual download.
