Well, this morning was the fourth time in the last week that my hosting company suspended this account. For my users, I am sorry for this continuing problem. As a note on this, there is another plugin, catlist, and I have disabled it also to try to see if we can do things without getting suspended again. But I have to hand-type the code to use this plugin in each post (the site has 2000 posts at present), so, being deactivated, this hand written code will appear as text in the posts with the word "catlist...", so please ignore it. There are many profitable methods of Bible Study. There is something, however, in Bible study more important than the best methods, that is, the fundamental conditions of profitable study. He who meets these conditions will get more out of the Bible, while pursuing the poorest method, than will he who does not meet them, while pursuing the best method. Many a one who is eagerly asking, “What method shall I pursue in my Bible study?” needs something that goes far deeper than a new and better method.

1. The first of the fundamental conditions of the most profitable Bible study is that the student must be born again.

2. The second condition of the most profitable study is a love for the Bible.

3. The third condition is willingness to do hard work.

4. The fourth condition is a will wholly surrendered to God.

5. The fifth condition is very closely related to the fourth. The student of the Bible who would get the greatest profit out of his studies must be obedient to its teachings as soon as he sees them.

6. The sixth condition is a childlike mind.

7. The seventh condition of studying the Bible to the greatest profit is that we study it as the Word of God.

(1) First, it involves the unquestioning acceptance of its teachings when definitely ascertained, even when they may appear unreasonable or impossible.

(2) Studying the Bible as the Word of God involves, in the second place, absolute reliance on all its promises in all their length and breadth.

(3) Studying the Bible as the Word of God involves, in the third place, obedience–prompt, exact obedience, without asking any questions to its every precept.

(4) Studying the Bible as the Word of God involves, in the fourth place, studying it in God’s presence.

8. The eighth and last condition of the most profitable Bible study is prayerfulness.

Reuben Archer Torrey

Reuben Archer Torrey (28 January 1856 – 26 October 1928) was an American evangelist, pastor, educator, and writer. He graduated from Yale University in 1875 and Yale Divinity School in 1878. Following graduation, Torrey became Congregational minister in Garrettsville, Ohio, in 1878. After further studies in theology at Leipzig University and Erlangen University in 1882–1883, Torrey joined Dwight L. Moody in his evangelistic work in Chicago in 1889, and became superintendent of the Bible Institute of the Chicago Evangelization Society (now Moody Bible Institute).

Five years later, he became pastor of the Chicago Avenue Church (now the Moody Church) in 1894. In 1902–1903, he preached in nearly every part of the English-speaking world and with song leader Charles McCallon Alexander conducted revival services in Great Britain from 1903 to 1905. During this period, he also visited China, Japan, Australia, and India. Torrey conducted a similar campaign in American and Canadian cities in 1906–1907. Throughout these campaigns, Torrey used a meeting style that he borrowed from Moody's campaigns of the 1870s. In 1907, he accepted an honorary doctorate from Wheaton College.[expand title="Read more"]
